
| Anagni is a small town situated between the Ernici mountains and the Sacco Valley. Anagni is well known for it's history, for it's art treasures and for the famous episode of the "slap of Anagni"(schiaffo di Anagni). During the medieval era Anagni peaked at it's maximum splendor. Anagni gave history four grand pontiffs (Innocent 111, Gregory 1X, Alexander 1V and Bonifacio V111) between the X111 and the X1V centuries. Anagni became one of the places of popal residence, conquisting in the manner the name "Cittą dei Papi" (City of the popes). The major monuments date back to this era. | architectonic complex in Romanesque style with gothic inserts, said to be one of the most beautiful in all of Italy. The interior holds a precious artistic patrimony: - The mosaic pavement of 1231 - The spiral candelabrum - The episcopal pulpit - The Romanesque ciborium - The Caetani Chapel with the family tomb.The major artistic wealth of the cathedral is without doubt the cript of "Saint Magno" defined as the "Sixteenth chapel of the thirteenth century". Considered an artistic document of exceptional importance describing astrological and religious arguments. Inside the Palace of Bonifacio V111 (Palazzo di Bonifacio V111), built at the end of the X11 century by Gregory 1X's family. On the 7th of September 1303, (from what is known) the famous episode rememebered as the "slap of Anagni" (schiaffo di Anagni) occured. The interior of the palace is decorated with frescos of the second half of the X111 century, the hall of the geese and the hall of the Exchequer, (sala delle oche e salla della scacchiera). who arrived in Anagni as ambassodore of the city of Brescia to discuss the presupposition of the alliance between Pope Adriano 1V and the Lombard league. The Town Hall presents an original architectonic solution of established arcades following one another in stone which "the hall of consideration (la sala della Ragione). Barnekow house (Casa Barnekow) is also another admirable example architectual beauty of the medieval civil, externally decorated with frescos of the X1X century. Along the main walkway many beautiful buildings belonging to the eighteenth and nineteenth century are closely placed together. |

Particulary remarkable is the building which belonged to the Caetani family, today known as the "Traietto Palace" (Palazzo Traietto), with it's eighteenth century facade and in part neo-classic. Meanwhile the original medieval structure is well visable at the rear and partly within the interior.The outskirts of Anagni: Villa Magna, a Roman Imperial villa later to become a Benedictine Monastery, now days an agricultural farm. Abbazia della Gloria, (the abbey of glory) suggestive complex originally a florencial monestary wanted by Gregory 1X and Saint George already being a fortified abbey in the district called "Monti" (the mountains). | ![]() |
