The monastery of S. Benedetto also called Sacro Speco (the cave where S.Benedetto of Norcia, born towards 480, father of the monasticism Benedictine and patron of Europe. He spent the first three years in loneliness as a hermit). In the period of twenty years Benedetto founded thirteen monasteries all situated in the area, the high valley of Aniene. The monastery in which we are talking about does not form part of the original thirteen, it rose after the year one thousand or rather when in 1090 abbot Giovanni suggested the foundation of a community near the Speco. With the aim to protect and glorify the small cave (where Bendetto isolated himself from the
world) it then became an extraordinary architectural organism where stone over stone was erected. Within the interior the route does not obey any rule of rectory. Unforeseeable the fanciful spatial solutions where alternated, like chapels, vaults, stairwells of various heights and widths with vivid rock walls (the architecture is literally embraced to the mountain) and walls marvelously frescoed by the Benedictine monks.
